George Smith (Atheism: The Case Against God) made the point that an atheist should not immediately ask for proof that god exists - he should first ask the theist to describe god otherwise we won't know what we're talking about.
[It's not a bad ploy either. The theist will usually get so tangled that eventually he will declare that god is, ineffable, incomprehensible, and beyond the understanding of mere human beings (so what is he talking about!?)]
