The tithe money stays in the church and the poor never get see any of it, ever! Here's how it really works: * The Government is not interested in actively looking after the poor, so it hands over millions of dollars to the various charities and charges them with the task of distributing the funds to those who need it. * The charities are usually staffed by unpaid volunteers who organise the charity drives which collect cash from the general public. * It is also the unpaid volunteers who collect and refurbish the goods that are sold in the charity shops. So that's three major sources of income used to help the poor, but none of it comes from the church. All of it comes from the Government or the general public. [Naturally, with a little creative book-keeping, it can be made to look as if the money has passed through the church, but that's just an illusion.]

Yeah - that's why the CofE lost a wad of cash playing the equity markets. And why Archbishops like Sentamu live in mini palaces with housekeepers, chauffeurs, gardeners etc.
