All kids must read the Bible, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says* From: Herald Sun * December 18, 2009 9:12PM Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says bible classes should be compulsory for schoolchildren. BIBLE classes should be compulsory so children have a fundamental understanding of Christianity on leaving school, federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says. "I think everyone should have some familiarity with the great texts that are at the core of our civilisation," Mr Abbott said. "That includes, most importantly, the Bible. "I think it would be impossible to have a good general education without at least some serious familiarity with the Bible and with the teachings of Christianity. "That doesn't mean that people have to be believers." Source: www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/all-kids-must-read-the-bible-federal-opposition-leader-tony-abbott-says/story-e6frf7l6-1225811885777

The kids will be having nightmares if they are forced to read Leviticus chapter 26.
(I've never been able to get past verse 29)

This is one of those bland arguements that conceals a different agenda. Yeah, fine, kids should have some knowledge about xianity - and other religions - both as literature and as comparative philosophical outlooks. But usually people who promote it are looking to try to indoctrinate kids - in a desperate attempt to shore up the numbers who swallow their particular brand of woo. Though really I'm not too worried about it - atheism didn't just appear from nowhere, it grew during times when religion held much more power than it does today. The more they try to shove the stuff down kids' throats, the more the kids'll gag it up.
